Although Coal Hill was located on the south side of the Monongahela River, Mount Washington was known by that name throughout the early history of Pittsburgh. Numerous mines operated along the base of Mount Washington, where the Pittsburgh coal seam outcrop was easily accessible. The hill was also used for rock quarrying. For example, Coal Hill was used to quarry grey sandstone for the second Allegheny County Courthouse.
