Most people don’t know that Kingston, Ontario, was the first capital of Canada. From February 10, 1841 until 1844. Unfortunately, the city was considered too small, lacking in amenities and its location near the border made it vulnerable to foreign attacks.

Kingston is a lakeside city that is both rich in history and tourism. The city has launched several tourism campaigns to attract more traffic to downtown Kingston. Here are the top things to do near Kingston:

#4 Sandbanks Dunes Beach

Sandbanks is run by the government of Ontario, with areas for different types of recreation. Parks and surrounding beaches are visited by hundreds of thousands of tourists each year, with the Outlet Beach being the most known. Careful, Outlet Beach has become a bit of a tourist trap and now has an entrance fee. But only a few minutes way is the majestic Dunes Beach which is hidden on the south-western shore of West Lake and is easily the most visually stunning beach at Sandbanks. There are no entrance fees for the Dunes and is a lot less crowded.

1000 Islands

The Thousand Islands constitute a group of 1,864 islands that straddles the Canada–US border in the Saint Lawrence River. To be considered an island, a piece of land must stay above water throughout the year and support a living tree.

#2 Wolfe Island

Wolfe Island Kingston

Wolfe Island is an island at the entrance of the Saint Lawrence River in Lake Ontario right next to Kingston. The island is about 29 kilometres (18 miles) long and can only be accessed by ferry from both Kingston and the United States.

Once on the island, what’s truly amazing is the Wolfe Wind Farm. The farm became operational on June 29, 2009. It is owned and operated by Canadian Hydro Developers, Inc., through its subsidiary Canadian Renewable Energy Corporation (CREC).

The City Hall remains the centre for administering and governing the City of Kingston.  The City Hall was completed in 1844, with its scale and design reflective of Kingston’s status as capital of Canada at that time.
